Could you guess which musical film adaptation this song belongs to???
“We’re off to see the wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
We hear he is a whiz of a wiz, if ever a wiz there was
If ever a wonderful wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is one because
Because, because, because, because, because
Because of the wonderful things he does
We’re off to see the wizard,
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”
Of course you were right! these lyrics must surely be familiar to all and I am certain we all remember Judy Garland playing the role of Dorothy, the innocent and charming young farm girl from Kansas and her cute pet dog Toto who are swept away by a tornado to the magical Land of Oz. Moreover, while the house is landing they happen to kill the Witch of the East by accident and so must fight her sister, the Witch of the West (Starring Carlota Abaitua). Throughout the adventure she gets to know fantastic characters such as Munchkinland’s people (Starring Gabriela Artaza and Sofía Cachan), the Scarecrow (Starring Andrea Rosas), The Tin Man (Starring Samuel Tiedemann), The Cowardly Lion (Starring Pablo Gabilondo), Glinda, the Good Witch of the South (Starring Cristina Poignon) and the Wizard of OZ (Starring Alejandra Pequeño) while she faces many dangers in order to achieve her dream of returning to Kansas.
The story, which is based on the series of books written by L.Frank Baum in 1900 drawn 2nd Bto English students’ attention and made them get involved in a drama project to be developed in the 3rd term of the English subject.
First, we had to adapt the play script for our audience, mainly Primary, 1st and 2nd ESO students. Secondly, we organised and audition among students to have the cast of the play and so we decided to have two main protagonists named Dorothy and Kathy (Starring Clara Beldarrain and Luisa Galiana).Thirdly, we got started with the theatrical set and the costumes. Finally, after some weeks of rehearsals we could show our play to the younger students last Thursday 25th May.
We really enjoyed with the performance and especially when Alejandra Pequeño sang the solo version of the well-known song “Somewhere over the rainbow” accompanied on the ukelele by Andrea Rosas and Lucía Arzallus on the piano who enchanted the audience and led to the choral performance of the song by all the students that had taken part in the play. Thanks to all the students and their thrilling performances for such an amazing piece of work!
As a final thought, I would like to add something the scarecrow says in the book:
“I am convinced that the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed” The Scarecrow.
